Petrol £6 a gallon...? But apparently it’s on the cards

A Re-acquaintance with the Saab 9000

Safe as houses

Cheap cars come and go; they’re great for just getting yourself from here to there and if something major goes bang, then it’s not the end of the world, you just go out and buy another one.

However, when it’s a Saab they fall into two distinct categories. They are either a great big pile of doo daa or an absolute bargain.

My latest acquisition falls into the latter category. It’s a 9000i Auto in white with about 4 cows of the better part of a tree stuck to the dashboard.

Bodily it’s in extremely good condition, as are the engine and gearbox. It has impeccable driving manners and gives me a lovely warm hug all the way home in these cold, cold evenings.

9000’s are very nice cars and in many respects, the last high spec models are a nicer drive than the 9-5’s that replaced them. The thing about being a bit of a Saab aficionado is that it really makes me appreciate the good ones, when they come along.

My latest ride is definitely one of the good ones and, touch wood and god willing, I look forward to 6 months to a year of grief free motoring. However, this car does have one main drawback. The fact that it’s white and Automatic means that I am now driving like an old fart because

(a) I don’t want to get it dirty, and
(b) it’s so smooth that rushing just seems rude.

Well, as my mother used to say, “ a change is as good as a rest” and I am now very happy to get in everyone’s way, knowing the story will be quite different when I find my unicorn.

Drive safe
