New 9-5 (Addendum)

If you read my review of the new 9-5, then you’ll know that on the whole I wasn’t that impressed. I seem to remember the word ‘bland’ might have been used, and innocuous may have been casually thrown in for good measure. Well, I’m a big enough man to admit that I may have got things a bit wrong.

Imagine, if you will, the scene. My son and I are stylishly meandering through Castle Mall in Norwich when we chanced upon a selection of Saabs on display, front and centre, from the main Saab agents; can’t quite remember their name, “Fri-High Mother Superior”, or something like that anyway. The new 9-5 was amongst them and I have to say that no photo that I have seen has done this car justice. It really does look rather good.

There are rather a lot of plastic bits on the outside but, with it right there in front of you, it’s a good looking car. Obviously, it’s difficult to gauge size and proportion from press release photographs and you can’t discern build quality from them either. It is quite startling just how un-photogenic this car really is. Both the exterior and interior are a lot better than the photos would lead you to believe.

It is a very nice place to sit as you wait in traffic to pass some god-awful contra-flow or roadworks that are rife through this country of ours. Go and have a look. You’ll like it, honestly.

The one I saw was black which always helps and very well presented so, a belated “Well done Saab” seems to be in order. Mind you, I haven’t driven it yet. Fat Jez (Jeremy Clarkson) has and he didn’t like the suspension, saying “the new 9-5 is a great car until it moves”. Well, what does he know? He says most things just to get a cynical laugh anyway, sc**w him.

So I was wrong, Saab were right, end of.

Happy Saabing
